WHAT PEOPLE WANT: By Jambavan Dasa I look around me now and I see so much faithlessness. I see those who outright decry the existence of God and then I see those who are pretending to believe—hoping at some point their mimesis will turn into a genuine experience. Besides these, I see some people looking up to their leaders who are pretending to believe, in the hopes that this is all real. Why is this? Because people need a living example. People are sick and tired of actors. They want the real thing. We dont need anymore damn hypocrites telling everybody else to do something that they themselves are completely unwilling to do. When doubts assail me and I feel hopeless I usually first of all turn to memories of my grandmother. She was really my first guru. It was she who taught me to pray, who showed me right from wrong, who gave me my first Bible, and who loved me unconditionally. Her faith was unquestionable and her conviction lived on in all that she did. I thus grew up never doubting the existence of God because I saw before me a person who was living in the presence of the divine. Everyone needs a “grandmother” in their life. Someone who is the real deal. Someone who isn’t putting on a show in order to show everyone how devout he or she is. I was truly fortunate because later on in my life I would also come to meet so many great devotees who showed me by personal example that they were experiencing the divine as a reality. For them Krishna was a person with whom you could share an experience, not just an exotic word in a book. More than anything I want to experience that same thing they felt. If not for myself, just so that I can give faith to others. There is only one way we are going to combat this swelling tide of atheism and that is by having a bunch of grandmothers walking around in this world. Who can argue with a grandmother who ignores the arthritis in her joints to walk down to the church faithfully twice a week to feel the presence of the Lord? Please Krishna, bless me that I can be one of these rare souls so that I can help others. And please mind, stop being a hypocrite! Too many people are depending on you.
