I was just reading bits of The Lives and Death of Marc Bolan by Lesley-Ann Jones (bought it when it came out but only really skimmed it) and according to the people she quotes Marc was losing it from Electric Warrior onwards, ie The Slider was put together under a terrible atmosphere and by the time of Tanx Tony Visconti and Marc could barely be in the same room. Apart from the fact that the proofreaders miss that she calls him Mac at one point, she says that Marc was all puffed up from 20th Century Boy on, so that means he was okay until late 71 then lost it up until 1976 (although she quotes Steve Harley as saying that even in 77 Marc was sharing booze and a gram of coke with him). She also suggests that when Marc came back to the UK all tanned he was attempting to get closer to being like his partner Gloria, ie ethnic. I know some people have raved over this book but Im afraid I am struggling to take it seriously. Was Marc really that bad the minute he found fame, was it all downhill from Warrior? Im not convinced...
