I was just reminiscing today as I poured through old photo albums about how my grandmother was enamored with Lasheen. That in itself would not be unusual were my grandmother a usual person, but she was known to be a lady who did not take to many people. When he was staying with the family for a month in Alabama and my granny was living downstairs, sleeping in a hospital bed and hooked up to oxygen, he would visit with her and hold her hand and charm her in that way that he had with all people. In her deep southern accent, she sheepishly admitted, on more than a few occasions: That is the best lookin man that ever existed and he shore does have a way with folks! At the time, frankly, in a sibling sort of way, I was annoyed and jealous that he could pull such an accomplishment off so easily, but now I realize that this was one of two extraordinary talents he had - he could see things and capture things in a photo that others could not find and he could charm a crochety old granny in pain into laughing for a while.
