I was nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge by Garrett Passarelli. Garrett, I accept your challenge. Ive elected to do the Iced Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funding for Cystic Fibrosis research. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited genetic disorder which causes excess mucus build-up in the lungs and digestive tract. The build-up of excess mucus makes those with CF much more susceptible to respiratory infections, pancreatitis, and diabetes. Mucus build-up in the pancreas makes it difficult to absorb the nutrients required for growth. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, about 70,000 people worldwide have Cystic Fibrosis, with 30,000 being in the United States. Advances in treatment have enabled many with CF to live well into their 30s and 40s, though there still is no cure for CF. In addition to drinking disgusting malted beverages and having ice water dumped on me, I have donated $100 to the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis research in the name of my friend Jon Johnson Shusman. BEF is committed to raising awareness and funding for Cystic Fibrosis in hopes of finding a cure and providing support for those who have to live with CF. Boomer Esiason is a former NFL quarterback whos son was born with Cystic Fibrosis. BEF is not just a CF charity, they emphasize the importance of exercise as a treatment for CF. Exercise is one of the best treatments available - running, cycling, swimming, anything to get you moving. On September 27th I will be riding in the Salisbury University Sea Gull Century with several friends and family members. Ive decided to sign up as a member of Team Boomer for the ride. I encourage anyone interested to come out and ride with us or just cheer us on. I set up a fundraising page through BEF with the goal of raising $2,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research by race day.
