I was reading Romans 9 recently and it stirred up something within me. I think it was the feeling of sympathy mixed with gratitude. It seemed my eyes and heart suddenly opened to the depth of God’s mercy. The thought was overwhelming and tears could have easily flowed, especially on realising the fact that I am so privileged to be a partaker of this mercy from God. I felt remorsed for the many times I had taken it for granted. I didn’t choose how I was born; I didn’t choose the parents from which I would come to this world. I could stand on rooftops today and scream with joy that “I AM SAVED” but how about the Child who was born in Pakistan who grew up covered in Ijab from head to toe, trained in Arabic schools and her will didn’t matter one bit at those points, she grew up believing that you kill to please God and you get rewarded for it, she gropes in darkness and the message of salvation means little or nothing to her. She dies in this state and makes her way to hell. Yes, she might have been preached to but the circumstances around her did not encourage the reception of God’s word. I could have been born in this manner too but I wasn’t. I was even born by Christian parents and yes! I was born in Nigeria. This is a privilege indeed! “God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy on and he hardens whom he wants to harden” This is God’s word in Rom 9:18. How amazing? Yet one who doesn’t submit to Him will be punished thereafter and you cannot question God. He could build an object for the purpose of destruction alone just like Pharaoh was. His mercy is up to Him alone to display at will. I have been saved. I must live each day in gratitude to God for His mercy and grace. I should not take this for granted and that is why I must please Him with my life. I must also pray for the souls who have never enjoyed as much privilege as I have. Oh! There is so much beauty in Jesus; they need to enjoy this too, don’t they?
