I was reading online about the NFL making efforts to make the preseason more valuable and keep as many games, etc. I noticed that the NFL is looking at a few options 1) Two preseason games, and 18 regular season games. 2) Two preseason games, 16 regular season, and playoff extension, pushing back the dates. I saw online where someone said eliminate two games and leave as is for player safety, adding am extra bye week for each team to ensure quality games/health. I think they could merge these ideas. 2 preseason games - enough to get a look at the depth chart and warm players up to a long offseason. Also let rookies and newbies get a feel of the new system. Play them for a quarter, maybe two, and let the bench players duke it out for roster spots. Little more interesting. An extra bye week for each team - provides an extra week to the season 17 Regular season games - Adds another week (total of 2) which would keep the overall "Season" the same amount of weeks. This would also ensure that teams have to have a winning season or a losing season, and the only possible way to go .500 is to actually tie someone. This would help drafting order (tie records, etc.) as well. Playoffs would most likely be more clear as well instead of having bogus tie breakers. Extend/Restructure Playoffs - 7 teams per conference. Only the one seed gets a bye. 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 play with the lowest seed. Seeds are determined by RECORD, not division winner. For instance, if the AFC West Champion is say 9-8 but they won a weak division. They should NOT get the higher seed than, lets say, the Colts who win a wild card spot at 11-6. This ensures that the BEST teams get a home game and not simply teams who win a weak division. Also this lets teams like Chicago who was 10-6 get into the playoffs. What do you all think?
