I was reminded today of how very challenging it is for people who are struggling with trying to find a way to train and survive living with a challenging Snow Dog. Whether the issue is strictly behaviour or whether you are having neurological issues too, living with a challenging dog can be frustrating and can often make you want to take up drinking by 10 AM. They make you want to question what the heck you were thinking bringing this dog into your home. But within the frustration, the tears, the occasional F-bomb that may get deployed, with every challenging dog exists a blessing that they have brought with them. A blessing that is just waiting for to move beyond the tumultuous experience and emotions to the quiet center of the storm. Inside that quiet eye of the storm there exists blessings in the form of gifts that these dog bring to us. If we allow ourselves not to get stuck in the tumult, we take these blessings and we can apply huge life lessons to our own lives. These dogs teach us: - Never give up. Great things can happen when we persevere. - Never settle for operating inside the safety of our comfort zone. These dogs force us to think and operate outside our comfort zone. Outside that box lies a whole huge expanse of freedom from our deepest fears and anxiety where we are not bound by what we THINK we can do. - They remind us that their learning is a process and processes take time. Same holds true for us too. These dogs remind us that patience is a virtue and all things happen in a good and timely manner. Not necessarily in our time frame, but in the time frame of the Universe. Some things just cannot be rushed. - And most importantly of all, these dogs teach us the lesson of unconditional love and forgiveness... to love them and forgive them and ourselves all while being perfectly imperfect. Perfection is not need to find success. We just need to have an open mind and willing and compassionate heart. So amid the challenges and frustrations of YOUR special Snow Dog, please take time to be grateful for what they have brought into your life. Chances are that if you take the time to notice you will see not just the challenges but the abundant blessing they have brought to you. This is my challenging dog, Kaya. Thank you, Kaya for all the gifts that your presence has brought me. You brought me the opportunity to grow as a human, be a better trainer, and a better behaviourist in the process. Thank you, my beloved and challenging Snow Dog.
