I was six years old and mom had remarried. We took the train ten miles from Mattoon to Charleston so we kids could meet our new grandparents. I remember the day well--deep in winter, the Illinois countryside was covered with snow. We were as nervous as we were excited. We didnt know whether our new grandparents would love us or whether our new dad loved us either. Sometime during the day. I was in the kitchen with my new dad. His mother was cooking on an old wood-burning stove. While rummaging for something in a drawer, she uncovered a ball glove. It turned out to be my new dads old glove. It had been burried in that drawer since sometime before he went off to fight in World War II. He handed it to me without saying a word. That one gesture made me feel loved and accepted by this man who was now my father. At that moment the glove was the single most important object in my life. When anyone asks me who invented baseball, I say Charles E. Kearns did. It happened in Charleston Illinois. There was snow on the ground that day. --F.N. Wright
