I was so priviledged to be able to hear the story of a mom of one of my students who escaped the brutality of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in mid 70s. She shared how at an early age 6 or 7, her chores consisted of doing the laundry for 9 people and mopping the floor. You can guess she did not have a washer and a mop. She had to walk a long ways with a double bucket to get water. At age 9 her mother told her to pack quickly and they walked to Thailand for 3 1/2 days. She lost a baby sister and mother and faced the dreaded refugee camps in Thailand. Someone from the USA sponsored her family. She had no idea there was a USA. She was 13 or 14 when she came to US. They placed her and her brother and sister in high school. She did not know one word of English but through hard work (which she was use to) and determination she finished high school in three years (remember she was middle school age) Her brother finished in one. She learned to speak 4 languages. She said it saddened her to see kids in her class not caring about school and just dropping out. She was so very appreciative to come to America and get an education. She looked at me and said with all that was in her Im an American!... That made me proud to be one, too. For those who do not know the history....an estimated 1.7 million people were tortured, starved to death, beaten and killed under this evil system. She thanks God that He spared her and her family from that horrible time. To God be the glory!
