I was talking with a coworker yesterday. As we discussed whether or not he felt he had saved enough for retirement, he said Doesnt matter at this point, Im going. I loved his answer and I know he does have a solid financial plan. But I also know that he has witnessed the decline of age and death of people close to him. I speak from experience when I say...this changes your perspective. How much do you need to retire? I dont know. How long will you live? Odds are much shorter than you think....and what youve been told. Heres a quote from Forbes: Look at mortality tables used for life insurance and youll think you have a better chance of dying young; look at mortality tables used to sell annuities and youll think youll live forever. Exactly my point. Your financial plan CANNOT be left to some planner. Only you know what you want to truely do, and have, in your later years. Sure, you could work a few extra years (I hear that a lot from people I work with) but do you really want to retire when you have no life left to live? Thats why I say...financial planning is NOT about MONEY, its all about OPTIONS.
