I was the last one to leave the room and when I did the lamp went out. The floral on the walls became wilt and down it went, plummeting into the void of the room which was no longer there as far as any one of us could measure. We were out to get her. The nine of us cleared our heads and left no room for our old memories, for old loves, for the unresolved. The names pinned to the images of faces that we once knew hours ago would soon be gone for eternity. Our minds had been made and we were on a journey to bring them back out from the ash, to renew them after decades of false truths had weathered them away. As we set forth through the empty lot that groaned and split fresh cracks below our feet, we begin to pile into the shuttle behind the shed. There I thought I saw a light in the evening sky. It ran with the stars, connecting the dots by illuminating each star it touched, until it imprinted into my sky a female face. “The face of god,” I whispered, but the others ignored. They were silent, focused, and filled with fear as they stared past the pilot who already knew where he was to take us, where he was to leave us, where he was to never return from. My sister was one of the nine, and so was my brother. When we were younger we played war, crawling on our hands and knees through the garden beds. We would climb fences in order to grab a hold of lightning bolts, to harness the energy, to race across the yard. At that time it was all imaginary, for fun. It was a way to kill time until dinner came, which was just another way of playing the system in order to get desert. I don’t think our mother, or any of us ever thought that one day twenty years later we would be doing just that, going to war with “the light”, by harnessing lightening to race across dark matter. Only this time there is no system, only fabric, arithmetic, and the sugar that we crave is prisms and blood.
