I wasnt going to post about #Ferguson until someone who didnt share my viewpoint blocked me. I am encouraged with how many of my white friends try to sympathize with the battle and see the problems with our society. So now Ill spend the next paragraphs thinking of this in a larger context: Look, what Darren Wilson did is a tragedy but a grand jury did not find it to be a murder. Michael Brown fought an officer, thats a fact. Its not a reason to lose his life but I honestly believe Wilson thought his life was in danger. There was a struggle. It is confirmed that Brown was fighting for his gun. So this issue isnt about Wilson being a racist, or Ferguson being a racist city. Its about a systematic racism so deep in this country that no amount of violence will change it. What can change it is meaningful protests and education. America set up blacks, another minorities, to fail using poverty and a lack of education to confine us. Now we have 16-year-olds charged with felonies who dont know any life but that of crime. Then when these kids are back on the streets, they have no chance at a real job or real opportunities so its back to the hustle. And whos the enemy of their hustle? Police. And for good reason; theyve been assaulting and harassing blacks for years. American police departments need to be better in touch with those they arrest and address how they approach people who dont trust them. I dont trust the police and Ive never been to jail in my life. But I have been harassed--multiple times. We as black people, cant avoid the suspicion or racial profiling. But we can become educated on our rights and work on teaching the next generations that their brain, ambition and hard work is what will change this nation. It wont be done by our generation or even the next. We, as a generation, though need to start planting the seeds of change now. Thank you for your time.
