IRON LEAGUE PLAYOFFS HITMEN DELAY MOLES IN QUEST FOR HISTORIC DOUBLE CHAMPIONSHIP The Whack-a-Mole have been on quite a run this postseason. First there was that little thing called the FEDERAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP! That got them bumped into the semi-final round of the Iron League Playoffs where they shocked the Buzzards and earned a convincing win. Then in Game one of the finals, the Moles defeated the 12-0-1 Hitmen by a 4-2 score. Powers killed the puck said Mole forward Cliff Simon referring to his stalwart goaltender. Game 2 was last night and the Moles fell behind in the first but built up a 4-2 lead behind three goals form Jason Reis and one by Dave Kababik. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Whack-a-Mole was poised to earn the rare double Iron/Federal championship. The Hitmen, though, have a bit of pride and experience on their side of the rink as well and to their credit forged ahead when all looked bleak. With 1:40 remaining John Beattie scored to cut the lead in half. Time was winding down and it looked as if the Hitmen heroics would fall short until Mitch Handler deflected a point shot past John Powers with 6.5 remaining, miraculously tying the game at four. Controversy would surround the goal as the Mole players argued adamantly that Moles captain Steve Jensen was hooked on a play that would have potentially cleared the puck to seal the game. But the protest would yield no change and overtime would be needed. A Moles score and the double title. A Hitmen goal would mean game three. Early on the Moles channeled their anger into the offensive zone dominating the first two shifts. Eventually the Hitmen did break out and scored the game winner off their only real offensive pressure of the extra period. So its on to game three. The Hitmen look to return to glory and the Moles look to extend a playoff run like none have seen in quite some time. See you there-Tuesday 10:30 at the Aspen Ice Arena
