I watched Monuments Men late last night, its cable premier, I really wanted to like it. Its about a buncha 4F art eggheads, WW2, tasked to save Europes cultural treasures from the Nazis. Directed by George Clooney. He says something like You can wipe out a generation, you can burn their homes to the ground, and somehow they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history and achievements, then it’s like they never existed, their lives will disappear like ash on the wind (the music swells along with your heart). There was a scene later when a Nazi soldier looks at a room full of priceless art and then turns a flamethrower on it, and I spontaneously gasped like I had just witnessed a gruesome murder. That made me laugh, at myself. But despite those two moments, this film was really flaccid. Maybe George Clooney should stick to acting.
