Fellowships . . . Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Fellowship Grant Call Deadline: 12 September 2014 The Humanitarian Information Facilitation Center, with support from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, UNFPA, and UNICEF has established a journalism fellowship grant on maternal, neonatal, and child health that will enable journalists to produce a series of in-depth, well-research, investigative feature stories to inform the general public on Zimbabwes progress towards the achievement of internationally-agreed and national goals on maternal, neonatal, and child health. Five (5) places are available. Background Over the past five years, the Government has implemented various programmes to support provision of quality services for maternal, neonatal and child health in Zimbabwe. These have been supported by cooperating partners through the Health Transition Fund (HTF) and other funding mechanisms such as the H4+; Global Fund, Integrated Support Programme and PEPFAR. This scholarship therefore is intended to highlight the successes of these efforts, the challenges that remain, and the opportunities for further strengthening of health systems for the delivery of services to mothers and children. Purpose The journalism fellowship grant will enable journalists to - Raise awareness on maternal, neonatal, and child health and other developmental aspects that affect the rights and well-being of children and women in Zimbabwe - Inform the general public on Zimbabwes progress towards meeting national goals, key enablers (policy, programme and practice), and the unfinished business - Enable the selected journalists to have an in-depth understanding of the subject as they talk to a wide spectrum of players both at policy and implementation level as well as at national and local levels. Eligibility The fellowship is open to experienced accredited journalists in print, electronic, and online media who have demonstrated a commitment to reporting on health issues and are based in Zimbabwe. The fellowship grant is specifically aimed at inspiring research and investigation into maternal, neonatal and child health and only related pitches will be considered. Submissions The deadline for receiving submissions is 12th September 2014. Applicants are requested to submit the following - A statement that explains the applicants motivation for applying, understanding of the assignment, track record in health reporting, and a pitch of four themes on the subject matter that they will focus on - Three samples of investigative features published in the past. These can be submitted as hard copies or website links provided - A CV and letter of support from an Editor providing a guarantee of publication - Selected applicants will be expected to submit more detailed pitches on selected ideas using a guide that will be provided. External Relations Fellow: African Leadership Academy (ALA) Deadline: 12 September 2014 African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting thousands of leaders for the continent over the next few decades. ALA invites an External Relations Fellow to coordinate, implement, and manage of a suite of three mission-critical programmes: campus visits; external opportunities for students; and the Distinguished Guest and Executive Speaker Series, based in the ALA Campus, Johannesburg, South Africa. Responsibilities: Coordinate and Manage the Campus Visits Programme Prepare and deliver strong Student Ambassador training programme; Supervise team of 15 Student Ambassadors; Manage visitor calendars and oversee all related logistics in collaboration with relevant stakeholders; Contribute to team efforts to capture relevant information and data that can contribute to key decision-making about ALA’s programmes. Develop, Implement and Oversee the External Opportunities Programme Manage recurring and solicit new external opportunities for students; Deliver at least 150 opportunity slots for students per year, including at least 20 international slots; Develop and maintain excellent knowledge of students to suggest suitable representatives for opportunities; Effectively manage relevant selection and attendance logistics processes, in collaboration with other stakeholders on and off campus; Maintain current program data and records, providing routine activity reports as required. Coordinate and Manage the Distinguished Guest and Executive Speakers Series Develop and manage Guest Speaker calendar; Coordinate and execute processes to identify and secure quality speakers aligned with organisational strategies; Manage pre-visit preparation and post-visit follow-up in collaboration with various internal stakeholders; Support systematic monitoring plans to capture qualitative and quantitative data regarding the speaker series. Profile of Ideal Candidate Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as Economics, International Relations or Social Sciences; Outstanding communications skills, both verbal and written; Passion for Africa, the potential of its youth, and commitment to the vision of ALA; Contagious enthusiasm for maximising external relations value and student opportunity pathways and networks through this role; Experience in public speaking and presentation, event coordination, and working with youth; Basic proficiency in research, data analysis, management and presentation; Extremely driven, detail oriented and flexible with working hours; Ability to operate under pressure and meet tight deadlines; Self-starter who takes initiative and able to work independently with minimal oversight yet keep key stakeholders informed; Competence in other languages spoken widely in Africa (e.g. French, Arabic, Swahili) and social media is a plus.
