There is much more reason to suspect the Americans are imperialistically pursuing global domination than the Russians. In fact to say there are more reasons to suspect is woefully inadequate. America has been pursuing empire ever since its inception. It took advantage of WW2 to expand its hegemony massively and did the same when the Berlin Wall fell. It controls Europe to all intents and purposes. Simply put, the Russians are not seeking empire. They fairly obviously are, in an act of self preservation, attempting to counter the advancing Americans. The US may think its domination is benevolent. Millions of victims of its imposed and corrupt global corporatocracy would beg to differ. So would millions of Iraqis, Afghanis, Pakistanis, Libyans and countless others who felt the unrestrained and arrogant consequences of US aggression. There is a dark side to the US. It has a sense that its destiny is to rule. It has a misplaced sense of its moral superiority. It subverts free nations by any means possible because it thinks the end will justify the means. It is not shy when it comes to the most insidious tools of corruption. Putin may be whatever the Western media says of him. He may not. Either way, we in Europe are fools to think we are free now, whatever threat Putin may pose (and in all honesty, he poses no threat that wouldnt in truth be any more than an act of Russian self defence against a deluded US, which sees the world as its possession and birthright.)
