I watched this HBO series on John Adams this week. Occasionally, times call for the far end of the political spectrum. It is a good thing that the moderates John Rutledge (SC) and John Dickinson (PA) could not control the Continental Convention indefinitely. Dickinsons Olive Branch Petition fell on deaf ears in London. He still refused to sign the Declaration of Independence. Rutledge finally came around in the end. Sometimes firebrands like Adams and Jefferson are necessary. We celebrate them this week. I bet not one or two out of a hundred have even heard of Dickinson and Rutledge. We ought not give up the rights to liberty, property and privacy that these men fought to establish. Surely it is the object of government to provide just laws for the common good, but only so far as those laws first recognize the primary rights of the individual.
