I watched this excellent movie, Tigers, at TIFF yesterday. I highly recommend it for everyone, whether or not you have been informed about the unethical marketing practices by infant formula companies. There are still 2 showings left!!! For me, having been WHO code compliant and part of the Nestle boycott for many years, it was refreshing to see this story told so articulately with such a clear message. I was also inspired by the perseverance and determination of the characters (based on a true story) and of the production team who had to fight so hard to have the film made in the first place. As the producer said during the Q & A session, the very fact that it was almost impossible to produce and release the movie due to the obstacles set out by the formula companies is a message in and of itself-a disturbing one. For those of you who have seen it or plan to watch it, please keep in mind that these aggressive marketing practices are not limited to low-GDP countries. They are everywhere, even in Canada. The immediate consequences (e.g. infant mortality) may not seem as palpable in North America, but ultimately, the outcome is the same. The health of infants and children is compromised because breastfeeding is still not the cultural norm and breastmilk substitutes are still being promoted as an acceptable alternative. tiff.net/festivals/thefestival/programmes/contemporary-world-cinema/tigers
