I went to see the newest Star Trek film today. If you are not a Star Trek nerd and just want to see an outer space action movie, you will enjoy it. It earns the PG-13 rating, so not for kids. The rest of this post will involve spoilers, my personal opinion regarding things Star Trek and movie making. If you have no interest in any of these things, read no further. . . . . . . . OK, now that the rest of my normal facebook friends have scrolled past, here is what I really think of “Star Trek: Into Darkness”: Let’s get in our way back machine and go back a couple of years to the reboot “Star Trek”. As some of you already know, it took a while for me to get over the erasure of some 40+ years of Trek lore that includes multiple movies and television series. Of course, not all were created equal. None were flawless (don’t even go there Next Gen apologists). And certainly many left quite a bit to be desired. But they were history. Fictional story telling, but fictional story telling history none the less. They had value. They were the essence of the nerdy phenomenon that is Star Trek, they are a part of American pop culture, and a lot of fun. So, Star Trek reboot erases 98% of all of that. I needed some time, but I eventually had a peace about it. Ok. Great. Now all the creative teams have a universe full of stories to write without any of the baggage that the other Trek movies and TV shows had to carry around. Cardassian culture resembling Romulan? Who cares! Klingons with ridged heads versus tanned skinned Fu-manchu mustaches? It doesn’t matter! The series is free of all of that! Ahhh, it does kind of feel good. Ok, fresh start with all of the classic characters we have grown so fond of with fresh faces (except Len Nimoy, but we can put up with that). Plus, we are free from Shatner showing up (fingers crossed). Well now, here is “Into Darkness”. Oh, old villain. Well, I guess that’s alright. Ricardo Montalban was a bit of an over-actor (RIP). I like Cumberbatch. Maybe he will solve a mystery while he’s at it. Wait…new Spock just quoted THE LINE from “Tale of Two Cities” and the Original Trek II. Ummm…maybe just a coincidence(?). THE WARP CORE NEEDS TO BE REALLIGNED BY HAND!?!? ENTERING THE CHAMBER WILL KILL WHOEVER DOES IT?!?!!? THEY ARE PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THE GLASS?!?!!? HE’S YELLING “KAHHHHHHHNNN”!?!? Oh brother. You may be tempted to call it a salute to the best Trek film ever (don’t even bring up 4, it isn’t really that close). You might say “Hey Steve, they are trying to inject a bit of what you love from the “erased history” into this “new history”. Isn’t that a good thing?” No. The writers have decided to ignore a universe size clean slate and instead they chose to write on one little corner that has already been written on and erased. It is lazy storytelling and uninspired writing. It is a rip off. If for some reason you are the non Star Trek fan and ignored my warning and read all this blather, and have never watched “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn”, go do it. It’s on Netflix right now. You’re welcome.
