I went to the RMU Hockey Complex at Neville Island to night to pick up my sister-in-law Michelle and my nephew Will from hockey practice. Will plays on the Iceberg team. This is a team for children on the Autism spectrum. It was amazing to see how far Will has gotten in a year. Last year he was using a walker to skate around, and was somewhat not knowing what was on. This year how ever he is going forward unassisted, he is even skating backwards. Hes more into it this year than last year. He has a ways to go but my goodness it was fun to watch. What really amazed me is this young girl named Emma. She was helping Will last year, and again this year she is helping him, and he is crazy for her. She spends the whole practice with him. Also there were 2 young boys there, whos brother plays on the team. They were helping these kids too. The older kids on the team help the younger kids out. After a tough week, it was refreshing to watch this young kids helping out others, on their own time, with getting anything in return. But they actually did get something in return. Respect and admiration. I almost forgot the best part, some small kid who was using a walker to learn how to skate fell down. While he was on the ice he started making snow angels. Funny as hell. Lol.
