I wish people who designed public places -- especially places where, by design, people are likely to be taking lots of photos -- would occasionally think about we should hire a photographer to help us design a photogenic space! I feel that way quite often at music venues, which are rarely lit for good photography, even though these days nearly every band plays to a room full of people with cell phones, taking their picture. but the latest one to trigger that thought is the Carousel of Dreams in Kennewick, which I admit I havent visited yet. But based on the photos Ive seen so far, a few minor lighting and paint choices, maybe a little more thought given to whats hanging on the walls, could have made the place SO much more photogenic. Ive yet to see a photo from the place -- and Ive seen some photos by some pretty good photographers -- that conveys the nostalgia and romance of the old style carousel, and I have to think a lot of that could have been fixed with (largely cost-neutral) forethought to how it was lit and decorated.
