I wish some of the President image makers can learn from history. Governor Dukakis of the Democratic Party was leading the then candidate Bush senior in the polls for the America Presidency. That was about 25 years ago. What dogged Dukasis was his non-military background and been accused of being "soft on crime". To counter this, the Governor dressed himself in a military mufti and then rode in a military tank as if to tell the Americans- "See me, I can be tough when I become your C-I.C. (Commander In Chief. His pole numbers plummeted and he never recovered from this , and plus some other mis-steps of his, handed over the Presidency to Bush Senior - a candidate the voters never gave a chance, despite his resume gravitas as a past CIA Chief and a sitting VP then. It is a caricature of a photo-op to show me my President in "flowing agbada and fila" piloting a tractor trailer because he wanted to show me he means business with regards to rehabilitating the much dilapidating highways unbefitting of some remote corners even of cash strapped third-world countries, talk less of the Gateway to the rest of our oil soaked nation. Using the Presidential bully pulpit, the President should have summoned his Minister of Transportation, fire him for incompetence, while going on the National Television to make a covenant with the people, give them a time line on what his agenda for immediate rehabilitation of this important umbilical cord to our of a national highway that continues to tarnish our image, punish our people, dehumanizing us as a nation, leaving us with blood stained fingers for those of our citizens who had been sacrificed on the altar of neglect, callousness, ineptitude on the parts of many generations of, obviously not our leaders but our looters. I am not sure if the President drove some few kilometers along that highway to see how the sorry dual lane constructed about 30 years ago had been invaded by mega-churches and mosques as if tomorrow or in the near future we may not be needing 4-6 or more lanes on either side to accommodate a vibrant economy in the hands of capable, visionary, dynamic bold and patriotic leaders.The symbolism of a caterpillar riding HOS to convince or tell me as a citizen that his Government means business on this is a charade and tells me a lot of how low we have sunk.
