I woke up this morning in my own bed in Colorado struggling to figure out my emotions. While it felt really good to be at home, the feeling of what happened this past weekend in Austin was surreal. I left Austin feeling deeply unfulfilled on a lot of different levels. On the Friday morning prior to nationals, I was pre-riding the course after it had just down poured. The top layer of mud was super slick and greasy. As I was riding across one of the many off camber sections, I started to slide. I wasnt able to get my left foot down in time to catch the fall and my left ankle rolled underneath me and my bike. I heard and felt a loud pop. Having experienced many sprained ankles while playing collegiate soccer, I knew the prognosis wouldnt be favorable. I had x-rays that afternoon to confirm nothing was broken, but the most I could do was ice, elevate, compress the swollen ankle and hope that time was on my side. As most of you know, the parks and recreation debacle allowed for 24 more hours of recovery. I was only slightly hopeful, but I wasnt willing to throw in the towel until I had been on the course to assess the stability of my ankle. Race day came and as I was pre-riding I tweaked my ankle again. That was that. No CX Nationals for me. Withdrawing from nationals was like a sucker punch to the gut. The only thing lessening that torment was that my family was there in full support. They were just as disappointed as me, but they were there for me all the same. I only wish that I had had more time to spend with them in Austin! Now I am home to rehab my ankle and make final preparations for the last few weeks of the season. Onward and upward! A huge thank you to everyone who posted get well messages of support and love! The emotions of bike racing can be all over the place and my friends, coaches, family and Johs Huseby are the ones who help me hold it all together!
