I wonder how many people talking about hard work and boot straps and claiming individualism could make it a week without the labors of their maids, nannies, gardners, food producers, spouses, and secretaries. There is no such thing as a self made man. And the gradation of the valuation of labor in this country has nothing to do with fair compensation. Im also mindful that those who choose their own long-suffering servitude (which they can opt in and out of whenever they want due to the power they hold) cant be in solidarity with worker struggle because theres no way to experientially understand forced labor exploitation. When you create your own martyrdom, you cant actually be in solidarity with those victimized by power forced upon them without consent. Im just beginning to understand the big ole shadow of the protestant work/worth ethic. Hard as hell to look at. But necessary.
