I wonder if there is a sort of intranet between individuals who let us say, share extreme genetic proximity, experiential space, existential milieu, or the same intellectual anxiety. This perhaps speaks more to a similarity of activity of independent minds which might trigger similar consciousness (what I call intellectual anxiety). This of course should function on apparent independence, if it is to hold. Let us talk about dominant or fashionable innovative ideas, dreams, and the like. It is curious to me how and why what is termed multiple discovery, as it were, occurs. For instance, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, both independently advanced the theory of evolution. It is said that calculus was independently formulated by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (and others) almost simultaneously. Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Joseph Priestly, Antoine Lavoisier, etc., discovered oxygen at the same time. It is this anomaly (or is it?) which I marvelled at when in Vosloorus we began reshuffling the syllables of languages such as Sesotho, isiZulu, isiXhosa, some English and Afrikaans, to formulate what we called Golfo where for instance, to say that someone took my cigarette, we would say, thomo na o oyileva le zankawu yanami (motho o ovayile le nkawuza yaka), or o nzaye nge-e (oetsang?). Before the fashion could have possibly spread and been learned by others in various places, I heard people from Soweto; kwaZulu, and Daveyton also use a similar but not entirely congruent speech pattern! Now, in a family, sometimes independent individuals experience dreams with the same theme, or a similar message is extracted from those (recurring) dreams from people without contact such that suggestion cannot be the cause. What makes this possible? It is this kind of curiosity which makes me wonder if there could be such a thing as a collective subconscious.
