I work to act out of the old adage, If you dont have anything good to say... However, this video merits analysis, and I surely hope my friends, church affiliates, theologians and lay persons weigh in after watching the whole clip. The concept of Holy Ghost possession is nothing new to humans, especially those of African descent. Frankly, the blues-tinged musical tones and call-and-response is what sets it off, often regardless of what is being said--not the other way around. Its what colors the fabric of modern Protestant traditions. No problem there--I love the energy. That said, this blatant disrespect of humanity represents all that is self-defeating in contemporary churches. To condemn people who are gay, then claim to deliver them from who they are, rewarding them publicly with cash (to demonstrate favor for converting) is hateful, phobic, and pathological. I know Ill get a flood of people who are going to quote scriptures, but Im going to take a point of personal privilege here: Im going to delete proselytizing comments that seek to use scripture to justify hate and discrimination in Gods name. Simply tell me, in what way is this kind of farce helpful in advancing humanity? Thoughts?
