I worked for two different AIDS related non-profits in the early 1990s in Ohio between my time in high tech with CompuServe and Winbook. Most of the clients I worked with pre-1994 died within my time at the agency. Seeing the AIDS quilt in DC in fall 1992 was overwhelming as I knew far too many names. Many of my clients from 1995 survived my year in Americorps -- living several years as drug combinations had begun being widely used. Nearly 20 years later, many folks I know have lived 15+ years and are going strong (but still face intermittent illness) with the latest treatments. Today is World AIDS Day and I remember the generation of amazing people lost and those still struggling with and to eliminate this disease.
