I would like to propose a few action items we can all do to make our neighborhood a better place to live. In no particular order: 1) Get to know your neighbors - at the very least, get their names and phone numbers so you can call each other in the event of an emergency. If you want to go further, invite them over for a meal once in a while. 2) Dont just pick up after yourselves, pick up after someone else. There will always be litterbugs and gusts of wind that blow stuff around, so its incumbent on the rest of us to keep this place from looking too trashy. Believe me, even 82nd can look better if those of us who walk dogs bring along a bag every once in a while to pick up a few things. 3) Improve your own house and lawn. Install security lights. Keep things neat. Stay on top of the repairs that are needed. The criminal element prefers to linger in the shadows and places where it looks like nobody cares. 4) Get involved. Volunteer for one of our many local efforts. (ie. Montavilla Farmers Market, Montavilla Neighborhood Association, Montavilla East Tabor Business Association, neighborhood patrol, something, anything!) 5) Buy local. If you like a business being in your neighborhood, put your dollars where your heart is. Places like Mr. Plywood, Personal Beast, Bai Yok, Ya Hala, East Glisan Pizza and many more depend on our patronage. If the neighborhood cant support businesses like these, we will just see more vacant storefronts and used car lots. It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
