I would like to share this quote. I think it will help with the whole preform thing. You can edit this part but before I got with this group. Which is astonishing. I was with another. An someone posted wat I was sure was a preform. I could of been mistaken. But the fact is people want to think what they find is something serious. An Im proud of my preforms. Thete another part of ancient culture. Regardless. You can take all that off if you wish. But this is out of book that Im gonna quote. The methods of manufacture &the styles of projectile points changed through time, so that poins are effective markers of cultural differences. Basically, the maker would remove the core from a block or nodule of stone by striking it directly with a hammerstone, using a method called direct percussion flaking. Then the blank would generally be worked around the edges to form the striking platforms necessary for removing large flakes. The result is called a preform, which was further reduced by strikin it directly with a hammerstone or antler. As the stone was struck, the flakes were forced away from impact, on the underside of the preform. If thr stone has been worked on both sides it is called a biface. An antler hammer is softer than a stone one,and the force of its impact is less. Because the flakes are flatter, points made with an anler hammer can be thinner. Ya dont have to post all this but thought it might help some people just getting into this art world.
