I would like to take the time to address this story that has been all over Facebook about the 30 year old that died from the chiropractor adjustment in Oklahoma. Fox8 put the story out with ZERO research into what happened. Then some really smart people made a lot of uneducated comments about Chiropractors and the care we give, pretty sure quack was used several times. Let clarify a few myths 1) He died from the adjustment? NO! He was in the middle of having a stroke so therefore he had neck pain and went to his chiropractor. We can not cause a stroke, it must already be happening. Your chiropractor is trained to know the signs and symptoms of a stroke and knows when an emergency room visit is necessary. As a matter of fact there are several of you on here who I have sent to the emergency room to be checked before I do anything on you! 2) We are fakes and not real doctors. Well if you consider the amount of deaths that happen each year from a real doctors neglect then nope count me out!!! My malpractice insurance each YEAR is $400, thousands of dollars lower than a real doctor because we dont hurt people. And I see a thousands more patients a year than a medical doctor. Now dont get me wrong WE NEED MDs. I work very closely with all of them in my town, love my towns MDs. Secondly, on this matter we go thru eight years of education. Four year degree then four years of specialized chiropractic education after. We spend more time learning about the body then any other MD. We do this because we have to learn about all the different emergency signs such as stroke so you can advise people on their health. 3) On this story the chiropractor saw the signs of the stroke and sent him to the emergency room. They say the chiropractor didnt call an ambulance and that was where he was at fault. I agree here, call an ambulance but we dont know that the chiropractor didnt try and the patient refused it, it is the patients right to refuse one. Ive had SEVERAL of you refuse one in my office when I expected an emergency such as a heart attack. BUT he went to the emergency room where he sat for SIX HOURS. The chiropractor was well trained enough to know it was a stroke and he couldnt drive and needed to get to the hospital ASAP but the HOSPITAL DIDNT SEE THIS! EVEN AFTER THE CHIROPACTOR INFORMED THE HOSPITAL OF POTIENTAL STROKE. THE HOSPITAL AND ALL THEIR DOCS LET HIM SIT THERE. This is what eventually lead to his death not the chiropractic adjustment. Like ANY ANY ANY profession we have our bad ones. So, do your homework ask around, find out who is trusted in your town. If you have fears or questions about chiropractic just ask. We are all well trained and educated and are happy to answer them for you.
