I would like to thank 2 of my coworkers for helping me today..at my facility we readmitted a patient that we had previously.. only this time.. her cancer is terminal and she has accepted that. Yesterday when I went to visit her..she had nothing personal in her room. Her room looked sterile, white sheets, white blanket, hospital gown, and it made me cry.. she told me she was just waiting to take her last breath..I thought about her all night last night and decided I wasnt leaving today until all that changed.. one of the therapists said, I will help you..so, down the hall we went with bathing materials, a pretty blue blanket, a blue pillowcase, a purple nightgown, stuffed animals from my granddaughters. The nurse on duty was Allison, and she was there to tell us there is an easier way to wash her hair , without causing her pain.. so the 3 of us got to work.. keep in mind, this is no easy feat as it is beginning of the month and I have assessments needed to be done for billing ,Shannon had a full therapy caseload.. and Allison was passing meds to a lot of patients.. but they took the time to help me wash and dry her hair, put on her pretty nightie, change her blanket and pillow case to soft colorful ones , and place the stuffed animals at the side of her bed.. when we were done she took my hand and whispered , thank you, my son is coming from out of state.. and this is how I want him to see me..it will probably be the last time he sees me. I am sure Allison missed her lunch break, I will be doing assessments til late into the night.. and Shannon is probably still trying to finish her patient load.. but this is why I became a nurse...thank you my work family!!
