I would love for everyone to consider this Hate cannot drive out - TopicsExpress

I would love for everyone to consider this Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that quote that Ive seen endlessly on here today. Id like you to consider that every time you post something that focuses on the other side and why theyre wrong, all too often with inflammatory adjectives thrown in, you are flying in the face of this quote everyone purports to love today. The Human Rights Campaign, an organization I have respected for many years, has recently been doing tweets about politicians with troublesome voting records or other concerns, with the line Better know a bigot. This is not helpful to the conversation. Unless you plan to kill the people who dont agree with you, the key to change and more equality in our culture is changing hearts and minds. That is not going to happen when we sum up someone who disagrees with us in one (inaccurate, I venture a guess) word. Its going to bring the conversation to a grinding halt. We have to start understanding that everyone has good intentions and is coming from a good place ... Just likely operating under assumptions or beliefs that may not be accurate. While I and many I love have been deeply wounded by the position of many Christians on the subject of gay people, that position has truly never been one of hate. With the exception of the tiny, tiny fringe, which frankly would have died out long ago if not for people feeling the need to scream about how evil they were thereby just giving them much more voice and exposure, the vast majority of people who held even the most conservative beliefs arrived there through a genuine desire to be what God wanted them to be, and wanted that for others as well. While I believe their foundation is misguided and it has caused a great deal of damage, that is NOT the same as hate, and I dont believe weve ever had the right conversation about it. Because were too busy calling the other names like bigot, rather than considering that peoples intentions are good, and that their hearts would change if they understood a bit more. Tell us what you WANT to see in the world rather than consistently screaming about the evils of what you dont want. I think well all find that when we talk about what we DO want, well all agree much more of the time, and not be in the defensive because someone is hurling names at us.
