I would love to see a scheme like this in place. There are people who bend over backwards to look after where they live, or help disadvantaged people, and those that treat everything around them with complete disregard. The latter costs the rest a fortune and often are responsible for tipping a service or facility over the edge - at a cost to everybody else. We should have ways to reward those who make an effort and maybe persuade others to follow suit... Park tax perk proposed A report by Policy Exchange has suggested council tax rebates worth £1,500 a year should be given to volunteers who clean up parks and green spaces. It suggests that local authorities could set discount rates themselves, basing them on hours spent volunteering or setting a minimum number of hours for volunteers to qualify. The thinktank says that on average, local authority spending on open spaces was cut by 10.5% between 2010-11 and 2012-13. “The time has come for radical new thinking to safeguard our parks and make them more accessible to everyone in society,” said Katherine Drayson, author of the report. The report also proposes that doctors should give overweight patients green prescriptions to encourage them to go walking and running in their local park and to take up gardening, suggesting such a measure would encourage people to lose weight and to tackle depression.
