I would love to see this spread in the inner cities. As a public health nurse, I routinely worked the worst parts of the cities of Jackson, Mississippi and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it was my job to administer injections of medication to street people for tuberculosis, so Im not saying this lightly. If you dont live in the worst part of a city and have no reason to venture there (it can be dangerous), you have no clue as to what youll see or how so many people live. I worked in these places regularly for three years. These two teenagers are a ray of light. I pray that there are more and that it continues. This is true charity, which is what we need. Government programs and welfare tend to rob us of this duty. This is OUR responsibility -- not the States -- and when the State assumes that role, people are taught NOT to care. Why should they? Dont their taxes pay for all of the social programs? Isnt that the intention of all these social programs and homeless missions? Dont we pay enough in taxes? So much so, that there is little left to give to anyone in the name of benevolence and charity? THIS is how Socialism and Marxism can and usually does, rob of us of our humanity and decency. It reminds me of this passage from Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol: Are there no prisons?” ‘Plenty of prisons,’ said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.’And the Union workhouses.’ demanded Scrooge. ‘Are they still in operation?’ ‘Both very busy, sir.’ ‘Oh. I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,’ said Scrooge. ‘I’m very glad to hear it.’ ‘Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,’ returned the gentleman, ‘a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?’ ‘Nothing!’ Scrooge replied. ‘You wish to be anonymous?’ ‘I wish to be left alone,’ said Scrooge. ‘Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned-they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there.’ ‘Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.’ ‘If they would rather die,’ said Scrooge, ‘they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” ~ C.
