I wrote this in another thread. Lord give me the strength to make this my last facebook post. The music community is laughable. The minute someone is on the dole or a friend exists within an organization, the crimes of years past are suddenly invisible. Everyone hates Noisey/Vice until they want to write about your band. Everyone wants to tackle misogyny or oppression of original peoples, until an organization or friend does something racist. We all want great leaders and then spend no time recognizing the actual work of volunteers and organizers. We sit here, myself included, participating in petty squabbles over some antiquated funding organization like FACTOR and their inability to satisfy the demands of an inter-sectional community lacking any coherent identity or support structure. And we wonder why our conversations are mired in conflict and pain. The way forward isnt better juries or systems to dispense financial support (although they will help). The way forward is to build the infrastructure needed to make these communities self-sustaining in a non-subjective, non-competitive way. If you think this is impossible then you are not thinking large enough. I am increasingly more interested in participating in communities that produce this level of dialogue:· comonad/reader/2014/letter-to-a-young-haskell-enthusiast/ In fact, we have so much to learn that we direct our learning by setting up barriers — declaring certain tools, fields, languages, or communities not worth our time. This isn’t because they have nothing to offer, but it is a crutch for us to shortcut evaluating too many options all at once. It is fine, and in fact necessary, to narrow the scope of your knowledge to increase its depth. But be glad that others are charting other paths! Who knows what they will bring back from those explorations. The grande irony being that Ive read this article several times to prevent myself from shouting into the void about FACTOR problems. It isnt the correct path. But Im just not sure if have the strength to continue.
