IBM hopes a new $3 billion investment in chip technology research and development programs will help push its semiconductor innovations into the future. Employing teams of its own research scientists alongside engineers from around the world, IBM will invest heavily in areas like carbon nanoelectronics, silicon photonics, new memory technologies, and architectures that support quantum and cognitive computing. Its first goal: scale semiconductors from todays 22 nanometers down to 10 nanometers in the next several years, and 7 nanometers (and below) by the end of the decade.
