IDOLATRY??? Hmmmm??? The word idolatry and sacrificing to idols has been on my mind for the past 24 hours. In the Old Testament, the idols were these big statues that sacrifices and offerings were brought before. Now, in modern day America, youre not hardly gonna see any of this going on right? I mean there are no big bullheaded alters set up where we are forced to sacrifice out of an allegiance to the the idol, so its not anything we in this society have to worry about right? While reading the third chapter of the book of Daniel, I realized that for me, that was the first time I could recall an idol being made as a depiction of a living breathing person and people were forced to worship it as if it were him. Now lets fast forward to the present. Not gonna throw out any particular names so Ill leave that up to you to fill in. And keep in mind, this is just my opinion. Scenario: On Friday night __________ is having a concert in town. You are a huge fan and cant believe you have a chance to go see __________ live. The tickets range from $45 in the nose bleed section to $225 in the front center section. Parking is only $20. To your surprise, there is actually one seat left in the front section when you check for tickets online, and you snatch it up! So youve just made a $245 contribution to this individual whom you love. OR.... Lets say its your favorite football team. I mean, youve loved this team for 20 or more years and their playing a home game against a division rival that you cant stand. PLUS, the game is outside and its gonna be 28 degrees at kickoff. Ticket prices range about the same as the concert. $45 in the nose bleed section all the way up to $225 closest to the sideline. Factor in another $20 for parking. So your actually paying $245 do freeze for about 4 or 5 hours to watch a game in total discomfort. ***NOW BY DEFINITION... An {idol} is object of adoration: somebody or something greatly admired or loved, often to excess And to {sacrifice} means giving up of something valued: a giving up of something valuable or important for somebody or something else considered to be of more value or importance. Now I know this is a stretch, and like I stated earlier this is merely an opinion, but wouldnt that technically be kinda, sorta, a little bit like sacrificing to an idol? Lets do one last scenario. Scenario: Church is Sunday. The Creator of everything youll ever know, God Himself, is gonna be in the building and Its absolutely free of charge. There are comfortable seats available right up front. Question: Are you as excited about being in Gods presence as that person/team you like? Are you willing to go to extreme measures to get as close to the front as possible and grab one of the many open seats? Are you as eager to sacrifice that same $245 to the God who said you should put no other gods before Him? OR!!!! Theres a homeless person on the side of the road whom the bible defines as your brother that you should love as yourself. But you really want to go to that concert/game and have only enough to pay for your ticket and parking. But that person is freezing because its 28 degrees outside. IF YOU PUT MORE VALUE ON IT THAN YOU DO ON: #1. GOD & #2. HUMAN LIFE, ITS AN IDOL. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
