IFAWs director of facilities just sent this note to the staff ... Monarch butterflies are known for their beauty and extraordinary migration, but many people don’t know the species has been in sharp decline since the late 1990s, largely because of a loss of milkweed, which is critical to their survival. To do our part to help restore natural habitat and attract monarch butterflies, we will be planting native milkweed in the areas just outside the café and just outside the training room. The honey bee population is also on the decline. Bees as pollinators are widely recognized as contributing to ecological relationships, ecosystem conservation and stability. If this decline continues we run the risk of losing the worlds flora. We are taking steps to aid the pollinators on the Cape. We will be erecting two bee hives in the area across from the east wing external door, well away from frequently traveled paths.
