IIT education is getting really expensive these days. I sat through an idle Saturday running some experiments in the background and compiling the following list. Really amazing figures - I did not pay such amounts in an entire year during my BTech even after including meal and other expenses. Fees to be paid by a 2013 batch General category BTech hosteller student for the 2014-15-I semester IITB Rs 59,876 IITBBS Rs 58,500 IITH Rs 58,400 IITR Rs 57,980 IITG Rs 57,250 IITK Rs 56,592 IITJ Rs 56,100 IITM Rs 51,627 IITRPR Rs 51,150 IITD Rs 51,035 IITBHU Rs 50,950 IITP Rs 50,150 IITMANDI Rs 48,100 *IITH charges . Calculating these values is a bit tricky since several places (like Kanpur and Mandi) dont give a breakup, and others like IITH charge Rs 15,000 as dining charges which I have subtracted that since no one else charges in this manner - help me correct these values if you can. What is interesting is that the values in the list span almost 25% of the lowest value in the list - quite a variance. What is even more interesting is that institutes both ends of the spectrum, IITB and IITD, are metro IITs, and have a difference of 17%. Ropar charges more than Delhi and Hyderabad more than Kanpur. I have not included IITs for which it took me more than 10 minutes to confidently figure out this number. I chose the fees for the 2013 batch since this would not include one time charges that one pays at the time of admission. So the above values include tuition, hostel, electricity, various annual charges, contributions, but not food and other daily expenses. This also means that the spring semester fees at all these places would be lower since they would not include annual charges. Let the discussions begin!
