IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: It is with a heavy heart that I must let you know we have suspended publication of our weekly digital edition of The Sarasota News Leader. Advertising revenue never amounted to nearly enough to sustain the publication, and costs of staff and publishing were coming from our personal funds. Fortunately, based on our recent survey of subscribers, there is strong support for a paid subscription to the News Leader. If we can sign up enough subscribers to cover our basic editorial budget, then we can recommence publication. In the interim, we will continue to maintain our website and all of our archival issues, dating back to Sept. 21, 2012, all accessible at SarasotaNewsLeader. Additionally, we will use that website to provide news reports and commentaries about events we feel are of importance to our readers; we will alert subscribers to any published articles by email. Going forward, our goal for the News Leader as a reader-supported publication includes several enhancements. Among those would be major stories provided online at our website, with the weekly subscribers’ email containing brief summaries and links to those stories. We also hope to provide more frequent emails about breaking news, also with links to complete stories on our website. And, of course, we would resume the weekly publication of the digital edition. At some point, we also would like to develop a specific app for readers who use iPads or Android tablets. The News Leader became a widely read, award-winning publication because of the great efforts of our editorial team and contributors, including Production Manager Cleve Posey, Associate Editor Cooper Levey-Baker, City Editor Stan Zimmerman, County Editor Roger Drouin, Copy Editor Vicki Chatley, Staff Photographer Norman Schimmel, Editorial Cartoonist John Riley, A&E Writer Elinor Rogosin and Contributing Writers Harriet Cuthbert and Fran Palmeri. We are so grateful for our readers, whose words of encouragement and gratitude, along with frequent social media shares, helped boost the profile of the News Leader and earn us almost 6,000 subscribers. You are the ones who have valued our comprehensive coverage and unique voice in the community. We hope the silencing of that voice is only temporary.
