★ IMPORTANT CURRENT AFFAIRS : 16.01.2014 ★ 1. Arunachal Pradesh witnessed the first trial run of a rail engine on 15 January 2014. The first trial run was of 20-km from Harmutty in Lakhimpur district of Assam to the Arunachal Pradesh capital Itanagar. 2. Jimmy Walker of the US won the Sony Open golf tournament held in Hawaii on 12 January 2014. This was his second PGA Tour title. He won 1.08 million dollars in prize money. 3. Dr Girija Vyas , Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has launched the Housing Start Up Index (HSUI) logo, web site and monitoring tool “Integrated Urban Poverty Monitoring System” (IPoMs) for JnNURM and Rajiv Awas Yojana ( RAY). 4. The Indian Coast Guard Ship Abhinav was commissioned in Kochi on 15 January 2014 by the Director General of Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapiyal. Abhinav is the third in the series of twenty Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) and has been designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. 9. Jet Airways (India) Ltd.’s CEO Garry Kenneth Toomey, who joined the airline barely seven months ago, has resigned. “Ravishankar Gopalakrishnan, the chief financial officer, will officiate as the “acting chief executive officer” till the board identifies and appoints a new CEO,” the airline said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange. 10. Well-known Indian economics professor in US dead. Adhip Chaudhuri, an international economist who taught at Georgetown University, died in Vienna, Virginia, earlier this week from lung cancer, his family announced. He was 63. He was recognised as teacher of the year three times.
