IMPORTANT NEWS MTPA ENGAGES WITH MACAU TAXI DRIVER MUTUAL ASSOCIATION Hi everyone I have some great and important news for the MTPA. I would like to advise you all that I have met with Mr Tony Kuok, the Chairman of the Macau Taxi Driver Mutual Association (MTDMA). It was a fantastic meeting. Tony is a great guy, I was very impressed with his knowledge of the Macau taxi industry. He started driving taxis in Macau in 1975 and he completely knows and understands the Macau taxi situation. It seems his organisation is the governing body of the “White List” guys. The drivers in his Association tend to be the older and more considerate drivers, not the terrible “Black List” guys. Tony’s members are the ones whose reputations have been suffering at the hands of these terrible “Black list fishermen”. Before I continue, let me supply an English-language paraphrasing of the Chinese description of the Macau Taxi Driver Mutual Association as outlined on their website: ———starts here——— The Association was established in 1985 by a group of taxi drivers and has played an important role ever since in the transportation industry of Macau. The Association carries out consultation meetings and proposes ideas to the government in order to strive for a fair, honest and scrupulous taxi industry. Tony Kuok, the chairman of the association, is also a member of the Macau Government Traffic Services Committee Advisory Board. His association, aside from regularly participating in cultural, recreational and social affairs, has been an integral part in proposing viable solutions to improve the industry. The Association started with only a handful of members and has grown to more than 1,500 members, the majority being taxi drivers as well as owners and part-time on-call taxi drivers. ———ends here——— Mr Kuok and his Association are absolutely supportive of the Macau Government’s proposed changes to the Macau Taxi Industry. As such, I can announce that the Macau Taxi Driver Mutual Association and the Macau Taxi Passengers Association stand side-by-side in supporting the introduction of GPS equipment and audio recording in taxis, as well as all the other recommendations in the Macau Government’s consultation document on the legal framework governing the Macau Taxi Industry. For your information there is a brief English language summary of this consultation document and its recommendations in Appendix IV of the MTPA’s submission to the consultation process, which you can download here: https://facebook/download/1470137886590347/MTPA%20Submission%2023%20Sep%202014.pdf (or you can just click Download or Preview at the bottom of this post). But wait there’s more - much more! I can also advise that the Macau Taxi Driver Mutual Association operates a privately funded taxi call service! Tony has given me his personal assurance that any MTPA member who calls the number will be treated with dignity and respect and given the proper service that one would expect of a normal competent taxi call service. Specifically: * The telephone operators speak both Chinese AND ENGLISH! * The number is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week * The operators will NEVER ask “how many gifts are you offering” (!!!) * The taxis will come no matter how short or long your journey is * There is NO EXTRA FEE for using the service - just pay what is on the meter * NOTE: they can only send a taxi if taxis are available, but they will be HONEST about the availability of taxis. Tony has told me that I am welcome to publicise the telephone number of his Association’s taxi call service. So here it is: +853 2828 3283. Tony has asked me to advise our members that if a passenger in any of their taxis leaves something behind in the taxi it will NOT BE STOLEN! Instead, they will keep the item and it will go in their lost and found system. To retrieve your item please call them on +853 2828 3283. If they say “no taxis available”, please don’t get angry. Apparently if they say that, then it REALLY IS a case of “no taxis available”. Let’s be supportive and give Tony’s Association a try. Hopefully it provides service in the way Tony says it will. There is only one way to find out! Cheers Andrew
