IN OUR PUBLICATION TODAY 2/9/13 TOWARDS A WARM THRESHOLD BY PIUS KHISA If sanity really prevails in campus, it is time to embrace it; act by its dictates; and tuck hooliganism and sycophancy in the darkest corners of our minds. Never to see the light of the day. This electioneering period. To avoid regrets. To provide comrades with something to smile about; and something to be proud of. The political wind has intensified indeed. It is blowing towards specific directions, where strongholds lie. It is whistling a tune that is so appealing to our ears like a popular riddim. But as we dance to it, let us not compromise our cause: quest for integrity, fruits of unionism and ensuring that our welfare is well catered for. Let us not dish out our votes to people who will neither click nor raise a finger incase our welfare is maimed. To avoid the nightmare we have endured in the hands of the former SGSs; to avoid falling into a faulty and incompetent dynasty of egocentric men and women; to move towards a warm threshold: our union needs to be put in order. This can only be affected if we change our selection criteria. We should shun away from tribal politics. These are encoded in the various alliances that are mushrooming everyday. The need to belong to one has put some aspirants on toes. It has given them the worst of hell. They are unsure of where massive support and victory are guaranteed. But drawing from national politics for instance, tribalism has and will never do us any good. Instead, it divides and underdevelops us. Therefore, reverting to tribal alliances as vehicles for carrying leaders to the organization is dangerous. They will never take us to our destination. They will bring us to a terrible collision, with hatred creating rifts among us. In addition, the persons elected, should the tribal formula bare fruits, will be answerable to nobody. After all they would have been seen into offices by their tribal mercenaries; whom they cannot serve in isolation. But to see to it that our union lives to its creed; to revive and re-ignite the power of our comradeship: we should elect leaders on grounds of policy and ideology as spelled by their manifestoes. Furthermore, incompetent persons should be locked out. A couple of these have served in various associations and as class representatives. But due to one reason or another, they have not delivered. What good will they do to comrades then? One thing they should know is that having held such positions does not issue one a ticket to fly to MUSO. As far as I am concerned, our union is in desperate need of a people of integrity, ambition, principles and competence. Therefore, ex-office bearers of various associations, which have suffered during their tenures, who are thirsting for various dockets, should be wise to sit back and nurse the sores of these associations. Rather than convey misery to the already ailing union. Again, we need a people of courage. A people with strict stances. A people whose hearts cannot easily sag or melt amidst threats. A people who cannot betray us. It is only through these that MUSO will salvage its true image from degradation.
