IN THE HIGH COUNTRY by jack Another indomitable crag thrusts above the pines, precise facets glinting in the afternoon sun. I rub the bark and moss off an extremely vertical trunk and hiss back at the wild, pretending a certain nonchalance for the impending dark. The raw edge of the wilderness bears only scant resemblance to a city park. Vestiges of snow lurk in the shadowed lees of the wood insuring steady trickles downstream. You could die here easily, careless in a day without the ribbon of highway and a well fueled path back home. A northern mockingbird revels in it, tossing the cold wet granules about, flagrantly white. Before long he is out of sight behind stacked layers of evergreen, piping his clear and varied whistles rock strewn among the thistles.
