IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: Prayer was a spiritual instrument utilized by believers of the day in order to commune with the one true God for the express purpose of demonstrating faithfulness through devout worship, sincere confession, and expressive thanksgiving. Hannah’s Prayer (1 Samuel 2:1-11) was a prayer of desperation. Hannah lived before the transition from the rule of Judges to Kings occurred in Israel. Her prayer was one of desperation in which she expressed urgent and sorrowful desire to bear a child even though she physically could not because …”the Lord had closed her womb.” 1 Samuel 1:5 Her devout prayers would eventually be answered by God and she would bear a child named Samuel. Solomon’s prayer of dedication was one of thanksgiving but also represented an urgent appeal to the Israelites to repent and conform to the will of the one true God. (1 Kings 8:44-50) David prayerfully petitioned God with the following scripture in Psalms: Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. Psalm 143:1 The prayers offered by inhabitants in this era led to divinely inspired revelation of “The Messiah” who would eventually appear in the world to foster change in how we sought the one true God (in the pursuit of faith) especially through the institution of prayer!
