IN WHAT political commentators described as progressive leadership, President Sata yesterday cast aside perceived political differences and asked opposition leader of the UPND Hakainde Hichilema to engage him directly in order to resolve some of the issues that seem to continuously place him on an assault and angry path. President Sata advised Mr Hichilema to divert from his “war path” and instead take advantage of his open-door policy to engage Government on a sober and mature note. President Sata’s remarks come in the wake of attacks by Mr Hichilema that Government is mismanaging the affairs of the country. The President was speaking through his special assistant for press and public relations George Chellah in a statement yesterday. Mr Chellah said the President urged Mr Hichilema to seek positive and objective dialogue with Government on various matters of national interest. The head of State said Zambians are tired of Mr Hichilema’s “bitter” and sometimes “empty rhetoric”. “As custodians of people’s interests, we refuse to be dragged to his [Mr Hichilema] lower levels of petty discourse. Our preoccupation is to discuss policy, achievements and challenges so far,” President Sata said. Mr Chellah said President Sata has recently endeavoured to inform the nation on several issues ranging from infrastructure development, industrialisation, job creation, health as well as an update on the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). “I would encourage Mr Hichilema to utilize my Facebook page and other government communication platforms to insulate himself from reckless rumour mongering and speculative claims about the economy and the general growth of this country,” Mr Sata said.
