INDIA ONE FRAUDSTER DUPED RS. 18 LAKHS FROM ONE FEMALE STUDENT FOR ADMISSION IN MBBS IN COLLEGE IN PUNE AS HE CALLED THE STUDENT FATHER WITH HER AT THE CANTEEN OF THE COLLEGE INTRODUCING ONE BOGUS PERSON AS FROM MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND TOOK RS. 18 LAKHS ALONGWITH ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS AND THEN SWITCHED OFF THE MOBILE POLICE HUNTING HIM 31st August 2013 Bengaluru: There have been a number of cases of agents cheating students looking for seats in professional courses, like medical, engineering, dental and others, but parents continue to fall prey to these agents. In a recent case, a businessman from Nashik lost Rs 18 lakh that he paid to two agents, who had promises his daughter an MBBS seat at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences. To gain the confidence of the family, the agents took them to the college, and struck a deal for Rs 18 lakh at the canteen, but vanished soon after. The businessman, T. Yashwant Pandit, has filed a complaint with the police, and the Central Crime Branch attached to the Fraud and Misappropriation squad has taken up the case and is investigating. CCB sleuths said that Pandit’s daughter had passed her 12th standard exams and appeared for NEET, ASSOCET (Maharastra) and other entrance exams seeking admission to MBBS. As she had mentioned her mobile phone number in most of the application forms, she started getting a number of calls and messages, offering management or payment seats in Maharashtra, Karnataka and other states. Her father called one such number and the agent, who introduced himself as Rachat Sharma, claimed that he could help them get a seat in any top private medical colleges across the country under the management quota. The agent told Pandit that there were a limited number of seats and they had to hurry. The agent said that he would try for a seat at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) near ITPL for Rs 18 lakh. Within the next few days, the Pandit family got a call from the agent saying that the girl’s admission was confirmed and that they had to get a demand draft for Rs 3.45 lakhs in favour of the address given by the accused. Rachat asked Pandits to come down to Bengaluru. Pandit, his wife, daughter and other family members came to the city on Sunday and stayed at a hotel where the accused met them and explained the “admission procedure”. The family was called to the college where the admission deal was decided on Monday. Rachat then called one of his associates to the canteen and introduced him as a representative of the college management in charge of seats under the management quota. As instructed by Rachat, Pandit paid the amount to the “college representative”, along with the original documents of his daughter. After receiving the money, the man left saying that he would reach the money to the management and confirm the admission. Later Rachat too left claiming that he would bring the admission form which had to be filled. When Pandit tried to call Sharma’s number, it was not reachable. Realising that he had been cheated, he approached the police. Pandits have also given the footage from the college CCTVs to the police, to help them identify the accused. The cheats have also taken the original documents of the girl, who will find it difficult to apply in other colleges too, the CCB sleuths said. “We are going through the footage and the call records of both the accused. It is suspected that the accused could be part of a larger gang,” the CCB sleuths said.
