INDIA UNLIMITED Perspective of Arnold Joseph Toynbee (1889 – 1975), an erudite scholar and thinker, on India, ‘the only alternative’ for ‘salvation of mankind’. It should gladden the heart of all of us, who tend to be cynical at times. Enviable profile: British historian, philosopher of history, research professor of International History at the London School of Economics and the University of London and author of numerous books. He was a leading specialist on international affairs. Many critics complained that the conclusions he reached were those of a Christian moralist rather than that of a historian. In 1969 Toynbee wrote: “it is already becoming clear that a chapter which had Western beginning will have to have an Indian ending if it is not to end in the self-destruction of the human race. At this supremely dangerous moment in human history, the only way of salvation for mankind is the Indian way…..Here we have the attitude and the spirit that can make it possible for the human race to grow together into a single family—and, in the Atomic Age, this is the only alternative to destroying ourselves”.
