INDUSTRIAL COURT, LEGAL AID IN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN The Industrial Court in collaboration with Legal Aid Botswana (LAB) on October 15 held an open day to sensitise the public about labour issues. The Industrial Court principal public relations officer, Ms Idah Seoforeng said in an interview that they chose to hold the event in Francistown for many reasons, one of them being that since they opened office in Francistown, they had never had an activity that raised awareness of the court. She said another reason was that Francistown was growing tremendously in mining and constructions resulting in job opportunities, which in turn brought about labour issues, hence the need for public education. Ms Seoforeng noted that registrations of new cases would be their main activity of the week, adding that they would also be doing public education and giving out their promotional materials. She mentioned that their target audience is anyone who is an employer or employee both government and private sectors. Senior Legal Aid Counsel, Mr Bakang Buisanyang said as LAB, they provide legal services to represent people in the magistrate courts, the high court, industrial court, land tribunal and the court of appeal. Mr Buisanyang said most of the time they help in sorting out people`s legal problems such as family matters, employment issues and lawsuits like damages, adding that their target group are the poor. He noted that their mission is to provide quality professional legal services and ensure equal and effective access to justice for the indigent. Mr Buisanyang further said that currently they are conducting roads shows in different areas to sensitize people on the benefits of LAB. Also, he said their objective is that every person is entitled to equality before the law. He therefore said LAB endeavours, within its means, to balance the scales of justice in and independent and impartial manner. He encouraged Batswana to come to LAB with their legal problems, adding that in near the future they would be having an office in Maun. (BOPA)
