INEC: We Recognize Ogbuebego As Chairman Of Anambra State PDP August 13, 2013 - 02:29 — caption: INEC By SaharaReporters, New York The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it is sticking by its decision to recognize Ejike Ogbuebegbo as the chairman of the Anambra State wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement by the Secretary to the Commission, U.F. Usman, INEC analyzed the chaos and messy twists and turns in the branch chairmanship issue since 2010 when Chief Emma Nweze abruptly resigned his post, noting that the circumstances surrounding his letter of resignation were not conveyed to it. “Thereafter parallel executives sprang up in the party in Anambra State and Prince Ken Emeakayi claimed to have been elected by the Executive to take over the leadership of the party in Anambra State. However, Hon. Emma Mbamalu similarly claimed to be an elected chairman of the party in Anambra State but did not state how he was elected.” The commission further noted further developments, including the March 17, 2012 State Congress in which Ejike Ogbuebego was elected as State Chairman, following which National Chairman Bamanga Tukur in May this year forwarded Ogbuebego’s name to the commission in that regard. “Consistent with the above position of the PDP when the Commission requested the National Headquarters of the PDP to send its Anambra State Chairman to the Commission for the Anambra State Governorship Stake holders’ meeting on 18th June, 2013, the PDP was represented at that meeting by Ejike Ogbuebego as the State Chairman of the PDP in Anambra State,” the statement said. “The Commission received a letter from the Acting National Chairman of the PDP (Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuchie OFR) on 31st July, 2013 asking the Commission to withdraw recognition of Ejike Ogbuebego in favour of Ken Emeakayi.” INEC noted, however, that the tenure of Emeakayi effectively terminated on 17th March 2012 when the party conducted State congresses in Anambra to elect a substantive chairman, but that Emeakayi obtained an exparte order on 18th December 2012 restraining the commission from recognizing, relating or dealing with anyone else other than he as the PDP chairman. The commission then analyzed a rash of lawsuits brought by interested parties in Anambra, following which, on the 31st of March 2013, the Federal High Court in Awka granted an order maintaining the status quo in all cases pending in the court. “The Commission was on 7th of August 2013 served with yet another Exparte Order issued by the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt in suit No. FHC/PH/CS/213/2013 between Ejike Ogebego and 2 Ors vs. PDP & INEC in which the Commission was restrained from accepting, dealing with, recognizing or doing anything with Ken Emeakayi as the PDP Chairman in Anambra State pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice which is adjourned to 20th August, 2013,” the statement said. Taking note of all of the cases involved in the Anambra State chairmanship tussle, INEC stressed that not being a party to the suit in the High Court of the FCT which nullified the congress at which Ejike Ogbuebego was elected, it is not bound by the judgement. Furthermore, the Commission noted: It did not monitor the process that brought in Ken Emeakayi as the Anambra State Chairman of the PDP; The order of the Federal High Court which ordered a return to the status quo; The recent order of the FHC in Port Harcourt which restrained the Commission from recognizing or dealing with Ken Emeakayi as the Chairman of the PDP in the State. “The Commission has resolved that it will not withdraw its letter reference No. INEC/EPM/PDP/24/1/153 of 26th July, 2013 by which the Commission recognized Ejike Ogbuebego as the Chairman of the PDP in Anambra State and shall be bound by the recent order of the Federal High Court Port Harcourt Okey Goodluck Nwankwo Sent from my iPad
